Nevertheless, Owen not only enjoyed extremely high profit margins, but still employed children from the age often (he wished to raise this to twelve). Most of his labourers also worked the usual load of fourteen hours daily until 1816, when hours were reduced to twelve. Owen himself sought to reduce these further to ten per day, but was frustrated, as he often was at New Lanark, by his partners' wish solely ‘to buy cheap and sell dear’. Exasperated in turn by Owen's experimental whims, the partners tried to force him out.
To effect this was now to become Owen's life's work, first for children at New Lanark, in the Institute for the Formation of Character, opened in 1816, and then for all in the world at large. At a time when poor children received scarcely any education, and that largely religious, with even many philanthropists believing that further schooling threatened the social order, Owen decided that far more was required. The human mind, he believed, was capable of very great malleability, and a good character could be instilled in each by demonstrating that the happiness of the individual was contingent upon that of the community, and by fixing this association in children's minds.
5 And Owen continued to make money, enriching his new partners, including Jeremy Bentham, for whom New Lanark was one of his few successful investments. Owen soon became aware, however, that there were major obstacles to extending this plan even to infant education beyond New Lanark. His philanthropic aims attracted a wide circle of admirers, including dukes and archbishops. But after the first part of his chief early work, A New View of Society, was published in 1813, the clergy began to suspect his religious views.
